Our organization believes that understanding government – why it exists, how it works, and what it does for citizens – is essential:
- to the proper functioning of government (i.e. it stays within its structurally-defined boundaries);
- for every unit of government to be accountable to citizens; and
- before any undertaking related to government reform can be commenced.
The Institute’s initial program activities will be focused on the township unit of government in Illinois. There are over 1,400 townships in Illinois, and it is remarkably little-understood for a unit of government that is so close to the taxpayers. We are working with citizens across the state to advocate for transparency in government, promote citizen involvement, ensure responsible governance and deliver education consistent with our organization’s Vision.
In addition, we recognize that sometimes our elected representatives have strong principles and intentions, but are inexperienced in what responsible governance should look like in a unit of government. We are working with elected officials across the state to diagnose where information and skills gaps exist and deliver training and education on matters like budgeting and privatization analysis.
If you’re interested in joining us in our efforts to secure efficient, accountable and responsive government, please contact us to get involved. While our immediate efforts will be focused on Illinois, we’re always on the look out for balanced government leaders around the country, and welcome developing relationships outside of Illinois that will help shape where we grow our organization.
